The three-day and first ever Bangladesh Jewellery Expo-2022 that kicked off at International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital concluded Saturday with a huge visitor turnout.
A festive mood swept the stands at the event, which aimed to advertise the country's ornaments and potentials of jewellers, as a large number of visitors arrived at the venue compound.
Bangladesh Jewellers Samity (BAJUS) had arranged the expo to celebrate the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the country's golden jubilee of independence.
Bajus hoped that the fair, the first of its kind in the country, would help develop the local gold jewellery industry by bringing in more buyers from home and abroad.
A total of 65 gold traders displayed their products at the fair, which remained open from 10am to 8pm at halls 1, 2 and 3 of the ICCB.
The fair organiser arranged raffle draw for the visitors on the last day. The first prize was Tk 10 lakh and second prize was Tk 5 lakh. Meanwhile, the 10 third prize winners received Tk 1 lakh each. A separate raffle draw was held for the journalists.
Besides, various jewellers offered attractive discounts at the fair, which might have acted behind the huge turnout.
Uttam Banik, chairman of the organizing committee of the fair, said: “We never thought that the fair would have such a large response. The fair drew a large number of foreign customers and businesspeople who came to see the designs of Bangladeshi artists. This expo has undoubtedly opened up new opportunities in this sector.”
He noted that on the last day of the fair, merchants struggled to keep up with the crowds of visitors.
“I am satisfied with the ornaments I bought from this fair," said Nigar Sultana, a customer. “I purchased jewellery worth Tk7 lakhs and did not have to pay any additional vat or tax.”
"We want such fairs every year," she added, expressing gratitude to the fair's organisers.
The owner of Apon Jewellers, Gulzar Ahmed, said, “We have received an amazing response from this exhibition, and the sales were also satisfactory.”
The businesses that attended the expo were extremely pleased, and they declared it to be a complete success.
