In recent months, the incidents of theft, robbery, snatching and direct attacks on jewellery businesses and killings have surged across the country, prompting Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) to seek urgent security measures.
In light of these growing concerns, jewellery business owners have urged the government to provide greater protection for their lives and property.
In a media release on Wednesday, BAJUS has expressed gratitude for the government's recent initiatives to combat organised crime targeting jewellery establishments.
They, however, have called for further support to ensure the safety of the jewellery businesses in the country.
Citing media reports, BAJUS said that theft, robbery, and snatching have increased at an alarming rate recently, with jewellery shops becoming the prime targets of criminals.
Statistics reveal that in the last eight months, 17 incidents of theft and robbery occurred in jewellery stores across Dhaka and other parts of the country, resulting in losses of around Tk40 crore. This growing insecurity has left jewellers deeply worried.
Acting president of BAJUS Gulzar Ahmed said that jewellery stores are repeatedly being targeted, creating widespread fear among business owners. “Jewellers are suffering from extreme insecurity in this situation. We urge the Home Adviser to take immediate action to improve this condition,” he said.
BAJUS general secretary Badal Chandra Roy called for necessary measures to ensure the overall safety of jewellery businesses and gold traders across the country.
He also requested the immediate return of licensed firearms to jewellers to ensure their protection.
Statistics show that in the first three months of 2025 alone, 11 incidents of theft and robbery took place across the country.
